1. Spanish Language Inclusion
The AMA has made a noteworthy addition to the CPT® 2024 code set by introducing Spanish descriptors. These descriptors span across 11,000+ medical procedures and services. This move breaks down language barriers, creating a more inclusive healthcare space while promoting transparency. 2. Streamlined COVID-19 Immunization Reporting

- Over 50 existing codes have been consolidated to streamline the process of reporting COVID-19 immunizations.
- Introduction of temporary codes (91318–91322) — to distinguish monovalent vaccine products from Moderna and Pfizer against COVID-19. These temporary codes will come into effect once approved by the FDA.
- New code 90480 — to report any COVID-19 vaccine administration (it replaces all previously approved product-specific codes).
3. Modified RSV Immunization Codes
Numerous groundbreaking products have been developed to combat the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), a culprit behind acute respiratory infections in individuals.
To facilitate improved tracking, reporting, and analysis of RSV immunizations, the CPT code set now includes five new codes: 90380, 90381, 90683, 90679, and 90678. These additions aim to optimize resource allocation through data-driven planning.
4. Revised E/M Codes
The CPT Editorial Panel has updated the CPT 2024 code set to enhance the clarity of reporting E/M services in response to CMS inquiries. Here’s what’s been done:
- Eliminated time ranges from office or other outpatient visit codes (99202–99205, 99212–99215) and made their format consistent with other E/M codes.
- Set a clear definition for “substantive portion” in split/shared E/M visits. This helps when both a physician and a non-physician practitioner work together on a visit.
- Introduced guidelines for using codes 99234–99236 to report hospital inpatient or observation care services, admission, and discharge services when a patient’s stay spans two calendar dates.
5. Revised Category III Codes
Category III CPT codes, which are utilized to monitor and document emerging technologies, services, and procedures within the healthcare sector, will be subject to the following changes:
- Introduction of new codes (0811T–0815T, 0820T–0858T, 0864T-0866T)
- Revisions to existing codes (0517T-0520T)
- Updated guidelines and notes for various emerging technologies
Note that these codes are temporary, so some insurers may not accept them.
